MOVIE - DRIVE

A) PURPOSE

The purpose of the sounds in the movie are to create atmosphere. For example, the radio in the background is used to create a more realistic atmosphere as you would typically hear sports games being broadcasted on the radio all the time. Also, the sound is used to make the video more intense. For example, the music is very repetitive and last the whole time, making the viewer anticipate something good or bad that could happen however nothing ever happens, the music keeps playing right until the end of the scene.

B) ELEMENTS

Car radio (SFX) - This is typical of a police call so right away without even watching the movie you know the characters are doing something wrong.

Shouting (Dialogue) -  This tells the listener that whatever is going on isn't good/ isn't going good. It also shows the characteristics of the person without even seeing what they look like.

Music (Soundtrack) - The repetitive music makes the scene more intense, due to the fact that the viewer is expecting something to happen as the music sounds like it is going to change, however it never does.

Clock (Foley sound) - The clock keeps ticking to create tension as its almost like a countdown for something. This means the viewer/listener is waiting for something to happen however, like the music nothing happens.

Explosion (SFX) - The explosion at the start of the scene right away implies that something bad is happening, as the sound of an explosion is never good. Also, the sound of an explosion reminds most people of a bank robbery, so in this case, the explosion sets the scene right away.

C) MEANING

These sounds all help enhance the audience's understanding of whats happening by doing a few things. First, some of the sounds are used in order to establish the time and setting of the movie. For example, the cricket noises in the beginning of the scene right away tell us that the scene is set at night as thats when crickets are about. Also, sounds like the game being played on the radio tell us that the scene is set in America. Secondly, the sounds used all fit in with the genre convention, action. For example explosions, fast cars, helicopters, sirens. These are all things you think of when it comes to an action movie.

TV SERIES - BREAKING BAD

A) PURPOSE

The purpose of the sounds in the scene, are to create the atmosphere and let you know without even watching the clip whats going on. For example the gunshot in the scene at the start already tells you that some bad things are happening. Also, the actors voices clearly let you know what emotions they are feeling without looking at them. For example in the phone call, you can hear the panic in jessie's voice before you see him.

B) ELEMENTS

Car boot opening (Foley sound) - This makes the understanding of the scene better as if you didn't hear the sound of the boot opening you might not notice whats happening/ might not pay attention.

Gunshots (SFX) - The gunshots in the scene make it clear to the reader how deadly the gun is, it would sound like its doing damage even if you weren't watching.

People talking (Dialogue) - The sound of the people talking lets the listener know that the people are having a good time and not worrying about anything at that moment in time.

C) MEANING

These sounds help enhance the audience's understanding of whats happening by doing a few things. For example, by hearing how chilled out the people are in the scene, you know they aren't ready for whats about to happen. Other sounds in the scene are used to establish the time. For example, at the end we hear crickets, which mean the scene is set at night.

GAME - GTA V

A) PURPOSE
The purpose of the sounds in this scene are to first of all, introduce two new characters into the game and establish what they are doing. Also, sounds in the game are used to make the game more realistic as they add more depth to the game.

B) ELEMENTS

Seagulls (SFX) - The sounds of seagulls are used to make the game more realistic, as that is what you would hear on a beach front, without hearing this, it wouldn't be like real life.

People talking (Dialogue) - The purpose of the dialogue in the scene, is to introduce two characters to the player. The way they talk and the things they say, right away tells you what kind of people they are and where in LA they come from.

Music - The purpose of the soundtrack, is to keep the cutscene interesting when not a lot is happening. For example, the music plays at the start of the cutscene, as the character is just walking down the beach. This would be boring to watch if there was no music as it would be very quiet and weird.

C) MEANING

The sounds in the game are used for a lot of reasons. For example, to set the scene/ create a realistic atmosphere, sounds are added in the background to simulate what you would hear in real life near the beach, like car horns in the distance, or seagull noises. All these little sounds that are added, create a more realistic environment for the player to be involved with. Also, the dialogue in the scene is done in a way where you don't need to know facts about the characters to know where they come from, and what kind of person they are. For example, the characters that get introduce are young, and talk in slang. This right away tells us that they are from the hood in LA and probably aren't up to good if they are in a very expensive part of LA.

Radio Documentary - The Ballad of the Blade

A) PURPOSE

B) ELEMENTS

Various SFXs - The sound effects that are added, are strange noises, however are sometimes short and intense, adding to the intensity of the topic that is being discussed.
